Therapeutic grade essential oils offer a great value for your money. You are getting an excellent product that is concentrated and only requires a drop or two at a time. When compared dose for dose to over the counter drugs with many side effects, essential oils are very economical and support a healthy lifestyle. At first glance, essential oils seem expensive. This is often because we are used to going to the drug store to purchase a cold remedy for $8-10 a box which averages about .40 a dosage. In the United States, everything is BIG. As consumers we have been trained to look at the Quantity we receive rather than the Quality. We’ve been trained by marketers to think BIGGER IS BETTER. We are used to purchasing products expanded with water, fillers and additives.
Essential oils on the other hand are highly concentrated, often needing only 1 drop to achieve results. An essential oil used for combating a cold might require only 1 drop at .10 – .20 cents per drop. Essential oils require a great amount of plant material to distill a small amount of oil. For example, in a distillery 20 feet tall by 8 feet wide filled with German Chamomile only 1/4 – 1/2 cup of oil would be produced. A 15 ml bottle contains over 250 drops of precious oil! You would have to drink 28 cups of peppermint tea to equal 1 drop of Peppermint essential oil. This oil is also versatile as it has many uses and when stored in a cool dark place will last for years. Over the counter meds have an expiration date and are simply a combination of chemicals that will be stored in your liver, kidneys, fatty tissue and other organs where they will build up to the point of toxicity. Typically, over the counter drugs are used by the public and only removed after are found harmful, unfortunately after damage has been done.
When you look at a bottle of Lemon essential oil, keep in mind a 15ml bottle has about 300 drops of oil in it. When you use essential oils that are FOOD GRADE, add a drop to a glass of water instead of flavored waters. That 15ml bottle of Lemon essential oil is equal to 300 bottles of Vitamin water, without the artificial vitamins! Essential oils are versatile, they have many uses and when they are pure, they will last a long time. Just store them out of direct sunlight and DON’T TOUCH THE CAP! Expensive oils can be stored in the fridge to guarantee their potency. Citrus oils will deteriorate over time.
Not all oils are created equal. There are no regulations in the United States to differentiate between Perfume-grade essential oils and Therapeutic Essential Oils (In Europe they do with AFNOR standards). What does that mean to consumers? An essential oil company can package an essential oil with fillers, synthetics or inferior oils and still call it PURE. Most companies that sell essential oils are just DISTRIBUTORS, they purchase essential oils (pure or not) from a “broker” and put their packaging on the bottle. Look for a company that maintains quality control from start to finish of their products as they plant, grow, harvest, distill and package many of their own oils on farms. The purity shows in the quality and consistency of their products.
Save your money and don’t spend it on essential oils with uncertain quality. I used other brands unsuccessfully before I discovered essential oils that are distilled the right way to ensure a pure, potent product. There are few regulations in the essential oil industry and the standards have been to fill and dilute essential oil supplies to extend supplies and increase profits. Unfortunately, manufacturers do not have to disclose ingredients on labels to consumers. Look for a brand that has complete quality control, ideally a producer who grows non-GMO plant material, distills and packages their oils. This not only reduces the carbon footprint on their products, it can give consumers peace of mind knowing the supply has not been tampered with. The best quality oils will be tested for pesticides, heavy metals and purity as well as correct botanical species.
